This Week & RINGWORM!

This week we will have practices as scheduled, Tuesday and Thursday from 5-7 pm. We have our first tournament on Saturday! It's at North Sevier. To register, please go to trackwrestling.com. You will be responsible to put in your child's weight when you sign them up. PLEASE BE HONEST!   Registration closes on Friday evening. It's always best to register early, just in case they change the deadline.

One big concern we have as wrestlers is ringworm. Our mats are disinfected before each practice, so please do your part as parents to avoid your child getting it and spreading it to other kids. Your wrestler needs to shower after every practice, and his practice clothes need to be washed (not re-worn for pj's or for the next practice). Bedding needs to be washed weekly, and you need to wash their singlets after each tournament. Headgear can be wiped down with alcohol and a cotton ball.

If your child has signs of ringworm, or any red patches of skin on their body (almost resembling eczema), that won't go away and/or seem to get bigger, please see your doctor right away. You will need some anti-fungal cream or oral medication.

A worthwhile read...

For The Longest Time - I Got It Wrong

I thought the ultimate achievement in wrestling was to win a State Championship...It is not.

The ultimate achievement in wrestling is to prepare a young man for his life by having him become the best person he can become by acquiring the "Qualities of a Wrestler" while in pursuit of a state championship.

Acquiring these qualities is more important than winning a state championship.

They are what is needed to become happy and successful in life.

These qualities are acquired during the pursuit and not in the winning.

It is in the pursuit that a kid transcends into a man.

It is in the pursuit that a kid is prepared for what life will bombard him with when he becomes a man.

It is in the pursuit that this sport is at its finest.

Winning a state championship doesn't teach these things.

The pursuit does.

It is setting a goal that is more than you think you can ever achieve and then achieving more than you thought you ever could.

It is in overcoming any and all obstacles that may be in your path in pursuit of that goal.

It is in the agony of learning how to "figure it out" on your own.

It is in making the necessary adjustments even after "You figured it out."

The hard adjustments which will require supreme sacrifice that will only make a small difference.

Which will happen to be the difference between winning or losing.

It is in working endlessly and seeing no results; and still continuing to work because your will is stronger than everyone else's doubt.

It is in failing miserably and very publicly in front of your peers and everyone who is important to you only to attempt again, even when the above average human would just quit, so he would never have to feel that humiliation ever again.

It is in not achieving your desired goal, after a very long hard season, one in which you bled to do so. To then make a personal decision to work even harder for another season with absolutely no guarantee of success.

It is in the knowing that you did everything that you could to achieve your goal and the understanding that sometimes that will be enough, and sometimes it won't.

You can't control that.

All you can control is to be as best prepared as you can.

It is in the understanding that when it magically is enough, that you are humble because you know the feeling of being on the other side of the win.

And when it is not enough you know to dig down and inspect and analyze your performance because there is something within the loss that you need to learn to help you achieve a future bigger goal.

And you find it.

And you turn a weakness into a strength.

And you keep doing that until you have no more weaknesses.

This is the process of becoming a man.

Many wrestlers who went on to win a state championship are now jerks.

Many wrestlers who took 2nd, 3rd or never even placed have become great people.

So it is not winning the state championship that is the difference.

It is what you take away from this great sport that is the difference.

It is in the pursuit.

If ones idea of achievement is to win a state championship then logically there can be only 1 winner per weight class throughout the state.

There is not.

Because the real winners in this sport are the wrestlers who acquire the traits which will be necessary for their success and happiness in life.

And those traits all can be found in the pursuit.

Practice

Last night was an AWESOME first practice! We want to welcome three new wrestlers to our team : Kannin, Bronsen and Nash!

We will have practice on Thursday (as scheduled) from 5-7 pm. Please remember to let us know if you are finishing up football/soccer so we can get you on the roster and save you a spot on the team. We are capping the amount of wrestlers again this year, so if you want to wrestle with Team Takedown, let us know as soon as possible!

Please have your wrestlers do their homework! It will help during practice and especially the tournaments! Have them do at least 50 sit ups, 50 push ups, and 50 up downs each day. They will thank you for it when they aren't so tired at practice :)

We have a couple tournaments coming up next month that we wanted to give you all a heads up on. North Sevier is on November 14th, and Caleb Williams (Spanish Fork) on November 20-21. Caleb Williams splits the age groups, which is why that tournament shows two days (you won't wrestle both days). We will post more information on these tournaments as it becomes available.

If you are planning on doing Caleb Williams (and most of the other tournaments that come up), you'll need a USA card. You can purchase that by following the USA Card link on the right side of this blog site. Click the link and follow the instructions to purchase. If you need help, let one of the coaches know.

Please remember that waivers and payment are due by November 15th.

Thank You!

Welcome Back!

Welcome back Team Takedown! We are excited to announce the start of our 2015 Fall Season!

Practices will start TOMORROW, October 27th. We will practice in the same building (the Team Takedown building behind Freedom Ford in Gunnison) every Tuesday and Thursday from 5-7 pm.

Registration forms and waivers will be available during the first two weeks of practice. The cost for the Fall Season (October 27th - Super State & Beehive Brawl) is $100.00. All forms, waivers, and registration fees are due by November 15, 2015, unless other arrangements are made.

We understand that some of you are still finishing up football and soccer, and won't be to the first few practices. If that's the case, please let us know so we can make sure we get you on the team roster! (Space will be limited.)

Please remember, all team announcements, practice changes, tournament dates, etc., will be posted on this website. Please check it weekly! Updates will be posted by Monday evening, letting everyone know the schedule for the upcoming week.

We are looking forward to another great year of wrestling, and hope you are too! See you Tuesday!

Camp Photos

If any wrestlers have attended summer camps and have some fun pictures or videos, send them to us! We would love to post them on our team site! Please email them to swinn1@farmersagent.com.

Update on Timp Camp

When registering for the Timp Camp, there is an option to buy a Spectator Pass. So it looks like they are now going to allow parents to video/supervise. So this camp might be a great option for our wrestlers!

If interested in going, please see the previous post for links to register, updated camp times,  and the address to the gym. Registration closes on July 24th.

Timpanogos Wrestling Camp

Timpanogos High School (Orem) is hosting a wrestling camp July 27-30, 2015. The clinicians are Jordan Burroughs, Anthony Robles, and Jason Chamberlain. The cost is $299 per wrestler and will go from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm each day. Wrestlers will be in charge of their own meals and lodging if you decide to stay up there.

They give a price break if you get a group together and all register at the same time.

The only downfall I could really see to the camp is that you aren't allowed to video anything, and parents/coaches are not allowed to observe due to the size of the gym they are wrestling in.

They are only going to allow wrestlers who are old enough to handle a camp without parent supervision, so this one isn't an option for our little guys.

For more information or to register, please click here. If the link doesn't work, the website is www.timpcamp.com.

Fishlake Wrestling Camp

Parents,

Here is the information for another wrestling camp opportunity that was brought to our
attention. This camp is sponsored by the South Sevier Ram Wrestling Team and
is going to be at the Fishlake Lodge June 29th - July 1st. So if the UVU camp
dates don't work for you, here's another option.

This camp is a commuter camp only. That means you will have to drive up and
back daily, and you will be responsible for meals (they will host a dinner for
wrestlers on Tuesday evening that is included in the price, but all other
meals will be your responsibility. The only meal that they'll really need is
lunch, which you could send from home if necessary). If you don't want to
commute daily, you can contact Fishlake (info is on the flyer) to see about
renting a cabin or a camping spot if you want to pull up a trailer or pitch a
tent. Or, you can get with other wrestlers and put together a carpool.

If you've been to a good camp in the past, or hear about one that sounds like
it would be beneficial, please let us know and we'll get the information
posted.

*Going to a wrestling camp is not required, we're just letting everyone know
about them as a courtesy. We will not be attending any camps or doing any
instruction this summer as a team, so anything you decide to do is on your
own. So feel free to put together a group if you would like to attend one or
more of these camps!

UVU Wrestling Camp

Parents:

Doug Spencer (Owen's dad) found a wrestling camp opportunity for our kids. It's at UVU in Orem June 8-12, 2015. You have to send in the $125 deposit and registration form BEFORE May 1st, and the remainder of the fee will be due when you check in to camp.

If you are interested in going to this camp, please contact Doug. You can reach him by email at out4elk@gmail.com, or by phone at 801-230-4931.  We would like to put together car pools so we aren't all driving individual kids up daily, so please let him know as soon as possible if you will be going so we can figure out carpool schedules.

We sent out an email to the parents we had email addresses for, which was most of our team. If you see this post and know another wrestler that might be interested, please let them know about it. Thank You!

Sanpete Messenger Article

Ok, so we have everything smoothed out with the Sanpete Messenger, and they'll be running the article on the wrestlers next week. So that paper will be out the afternoon of April 15th (or the morning of April 16th). HOWEVER... They could not guarantee that they would be able to print the entire thing, because of space issues. So if you can't make it to the Gunnison area and want a copy of the Gazette, please let Shanelle know by Monday morning (email swinn1@farmersagent.com) and we'll send you a copy. If you want to pick up a copy it will be available at Gunnison Market, or either gas station until Tuesday evening (unless they sell out).

If you don't really want a copy of the Gazette, but want to see the article, here you go! Thank you Mark and Jodi for doing a fabulous job showing our town what a great team we have!

Newspaper Article on Team Takedown

The Gunnison Gazette is out today with the article about our team, and the Sanpete Messenger should be out this afternoon or tomorrow morning. Be sure and pick up a copy, it turned out awesome!

**UPDATE** The Messenger didn't run the article this week. We are going to find out if it will be in next weeks paper and let everyone know. If you don't live in the Gunnison area and would like a copy of the Gazette, please email Shanelle at swinn1@farmersagent.com with your name and address. We'll mail you a copy!

Team Pictures & Newspaper Article

Last night we had our team party at the gym. Mark from the Gunnison Gazette came and took some photos of the wrestlers to put in the newspaper. That article will be out on Wednesday, April 8th. He is also going to send it over to the Sanpete Messenger, so it should come out in both papers.

We've emailed out copies of the group photo, plus individuals to everyone that had them taken. If you didn't get your photos, check your junk folder. If it's not there, email Shanelle (swinn1@farmersagent.com) and we'll get new ones sent to you.

The group photo is missing Kaylob Olsen, Durke Larsen, Owen Spencer, Owen Paulsen, Glen Paulsen and Gage Mackey. You guys will be mentioned in the newspaper article, but won't be in any of the photos. Sorry.

Thank you Cody, Riley, J.L, Spencer, and Rob for being wonderful coaches and examples to our children. They all look up to you guys, and we (as parents) really appreciate your time and effort in making our kids better wrestlers and people.

Parents: Thanks for sharing your kids with us. We learn just as much from them as they do from us. This has been one of the best years we've had with Team Takedown, and we hope the wrestlers feel like they've benefited from being on our team!

We hope all the wrestlers have a great off-season!
