2014-2015 Wrestling Season

The coaches have decided that Team Takedown will begin in January. We will have a parent meeting and registration sometime in December. The cost will be $150 for the season (January until State in April), plus you will need to purchase a singlet if you don't have one.

If you were on the advanced team last year, you know that there is the possibility that we will have some tournaments come up before January. We will post all tournament information on this website, and will still coach the wrestlers at tournaments even though we haven't officially started the season.

Even though we are three months away from starting up, encourage your wrestler to start conditioning now! They'll thank you for it during that first practice! Have them run around the neighborhood, do their push ups and sit ups, and start working on their up-downs. Taking them to an indoor pool and swimming some laps will also help.

Great Article - Must Read!

This was sent out in the USA Wrestling newsletter, and I thought it was a good article. With wrestling season approaching, I thought it might be a good read for some of us parents :)

What to – and Not to – Say: Parental Behavior During Competition

Parental support can be key to the success of any young athlete, wrestlers included. But research shows that when parents unleash nervous energy through verbal and non-verbal communication during a wrestling match, it can have a negative effect on the wrestler—even if the message is positive.

That's why parents should never coach from the stands, says Jordan Krebs, head coach of the Tippecanoe Red Devil High School wrestling team in Tipp City, Ohio.

"It is obvious that when it comes to the success of a wrestler, parents are a very important piece," says Krebs. "However, there comes a point when parents need to realize that they are no longer needed as a coach and serve a much different and more important role as a support system for their wrestler. When a wrestler takes the mat they want to hear the same voice that has been coaching them throughout the week in practice.

More than 70% of kids quit sports by the age of 13 because of parental pressure, performance anxiety, and injuries. - Luis Fernando Llosa

For parents in any sport, it’s hard to sit in the stands and relax, especially in an intense, grueling sport like wrestling. Many parents seek a release from anxiety by yelling and screaming from the stands.

Well-meaning parents say and do things because they think it's being helpful, says Dr. Alan Goldberg, a sports psychologist who is also director of Competitive Advantage, an Amherst, Massachusetts-based performance consulting firm. But athletes actually achieve peak performance when they are relaxed, focused, and not worrying about what mom and dad think, says Goldberg.

“If an athlete is worried about mom or dad being upset or disappointed while competing, it really has a great affect on the athlete’s performance,” says Goldberg. “It's the biggest cause of performance problems that exist in youth sports.”

Luis Fernando Llosa co-authored the book Beyond Winning: Smart Parenting in a Toxic Sports Environment and helps run the Whole Child Sports website, created to raise awareness about key issues related to youth sports. In his research, Llosa discovered that more than 70% of kids quit sports by the age of 13 because of parental pressure, performance anxiety, and injuries. Additional research discovered youth athletes—including wrestlers—feel embarrassed when they hear a parent yelling or screaming during a match, even if it is encouraging.
"It annoys them," says Llosa. "When it's negative, it demoralizes them. They try to block it out as much as they can."

When parent yell out instruction or "advice," kids hate that, says Llosa. He adds that what parents suggest often conflicts with what the coach has told the athlete.  As a result, the child feels torn between the parent and the coach, which makes the child feel confused and fearful, hampering development and performance. Self confidence takes a big hit in such cases, he says.

Mike Clayton, Manager of USA Wrestling's National Coaches Education Program, says wrestlers need to find an optimal performance zone to compete at their best. This zone is typically somewhere between 3-7 on a scale of 0 to 10, where zero is no arousal and 10 is the maximum. If external parental pressure causes a wrestler to go from a level of 6 to 8 or 9 then the parent’s actions are hindering the athlete’s ability to perform at his or her best, says Clayton.

Of course, human emotions are natural and will occur regardless of how we pre-plan for them, acknowledges Clayton. "Heart rates at these levels pushes chemicals into our blood stream that make us seem a bit unreasonable at times," he notes.

To combat these emotions, Goldberg says young athletes can sit down with their parents before a public competition and say this: “I want to bring up something that's important. I am not trying to be disrespectful and I know you are both loving parents. But I need you to know what you are doing isn't helping me. It's not calming me down. It's actually making me nervous and distracting me."

By the same token, parents can sit down with their child and ask these key questions: "What do I say or do that you wish I would stop? What are the things I do that you would like me to continue? And what am I not doing that you wish I'd start doing."

All this should be done in a calm, non-defensive manner to be most effective, adds Goldberg.
As for coaches, they should clearly communicate the expectations and guidelines for parental behavior at practice and during competition before the season starts, says Krebs. For instance, Tippecanoe Red Devil High School has an athletic department communication guide for parents and coaches that clearly defines the role of coaches, athletes, and parents. There are also tools available that can help foster discussion about the best ways to interact before, during, and after competitions, such as the Liberty Mutual Insurance Play Positive program.
Josh Parks, a volunteer assistant coach with the North Wildcats Youth Wrestling Club in Davenport, Iowa, says there are instances where the roar of the crowd (such as the crowd yelling "two" when the wrestler gets a takedown) can motivate and inspire.

And while he encourages all parents to cheer for every kid—not just their own—no child needs a coach in the stands. "Negative remarks towards their child, opponent, or the ref are not taken lightly," says Parks. He counsels wrestlers who feel their parents may get too excited or angry during a match to tell those concerns to the coach. That way, the coach can speak to the parent about avoiding that behavior without forcing the child to have that difficult conversation.
Parents can also work together to promote a positive and respectful fan environment during a match, says Llosa. Poor parental behavior can tarnish an entire program and overshadow a team that is works hard and plays fair..

Kids forget outcomes quickly, says Llosa. Win or lose, they move on. But they may never forget an embarrassing moment caused by one of their parents acting out during a match.

Update on the New Gym!

Last weekend, the coaches got together and cleaned up the new gym and got the mats put down and sanitized.

Our new gym is in the RV Center behind Freedom Ford in Gunnison

Coach Cody and Coach Riley

This new place will be so nice! The mats fit perfectly! Hopefully all the wrestlers are getting excited for the upcoming season... As of right now the coaches have not decided when to start, but most likely it will be in October or November. As soon as they decide, we'll have a parent meeting and signups. We will post all of the information when it's available!

Ringworm

Parents:

Please be aware that ringworm is a concern, especially when you have a wrestler. It's been reported that kids from the North Sevier area, all the way up to Salt Lake have gotten it this year, including a couple of wrestlers from our team.

If your child has obvious signs of ringworm, or any red patches of skin on their body (almost resembling eczema), that won't go away and/or seem to get bigger, please see your doctor. You will need some anti-fungal cream or oral medication.

Next Week and STATE!!!

Next week will be our last week of scheduled practices for this wrestling season. The advanced class will be on Tuesday and Wednesday from 4:30-6:30, and the regular class on Wednesday from 4:30-5:30. Please try to be to practice this week if you are planning on going to State.

If you haven't registered for State already, please do so on Track Wrestling. A copy of the flyer with all the information is below.  Please be signed up by Wednesday morning, so we know what wrestlers are going before practice.

I've emailed in a request to see if we can do weigh-in's at practice on Wednesday, but I haven't gotten an answer yet. I'll update this site if we get the ok. If we don't, you'll need to plan on being in Panguitch Friday night to weigh in.

If you are planning on coming to the BBQ on Friday night at the motel, please text and let us know. We need to know by Sunday evening who will be there so we can purchase enough food.

We want to wish the wrestlers going to Springville this weekend "Good Luck". We'll post a slideshow and results on Monday.

Slideshow issues?

If you're noticing our slideshows aren't very long, view them from a computer. For some reason, some phones only show about half of our pictures. I noticed it on our North Sevier slideshow. You should be seeing 52 pictures, but the couple phones I've checked only show around 20-30, and I have no idea how to fix it!

Team Update

This week we will be having practices as scheduled. This Saturday, we will be going to the Champions tournament in Springville. You sign up for this tournament on Track Wrestling, and you will need your USA card to attend. Registration closes Thursday afternoon, however, we will need to know if you are going by Wednesday. We will do weigh in's after practice.

Click here for the tournament flyer.

There are three styles available for this tournament. The style we do is folkstyle. Please be careful when you sign up that you don't accidently choose freestyle or greco (unless you are planning on competing in one of those on purpose). Choose folkstyle. There are different start times for different ages, so please make sure you look at the flyer so you know what time you have to be there.

We are also excited to announce that we are moving to Gunnison after State! Our new gym will be located in the RV Center behind Freedom Ford. Thanks to Braygen's mom and dad for hooking us up with the new space!

We will be sending home a note with the wrestlers on Wednesday. Here's a copy of what it says:

Emery and North Sevier Slideshows (and some results)

We also had a good day in North Sevier on Saturday! It was hard to get pictures of all the wrestlers, because they had us split up in two different gyms. So most of the pictures come from the little gym (older boys). I apologize for the lack of pictures of the younger kids.

I don't know all of the results, because they haven't updated it on Track Wrestling yet. But I do know some of them:

Kent - 3rd Place
Bridger - 3rd Place
Jace - 1st Place
Tezlin - 1st place in 4th Grade and 1st Place in 5-6th Grade
Keegan - 1st place in 3rd Grade and 1st Place in 4th Grade
Kelan - 2nd Place
Nathan - 1st Place
Owen Spencer - 2nd Place
Jerrit - 1st Place
Kyan - 3rd Place
Jake - 1st Place in 2nd Grade and 1st Place in 3rd Grade

Other Wrestlers that went that I don't have results for:

Owen Paulson

If they update the Track Wrestling website with the results, I'll update them here as well. Here's a slideshow:

North Sanpete Slideshow

This week we will have practices as scheduled. Advanced class Tuesday and Wednesday from 4:30-6:30 pm, and the regular class will be on Wednesday from 4:30-5:30.

We will be attending the North Sevier tournament on Saturday (North Sevier High School). The flyer says they are going to have registration on TrackWrestling, but I haven't seen it on there yet. I'm sure they'll have it up by Tuesday or Wednesday. Weigh in's will hopefully be Wednesday at practice, so you will need to be sure and let the coaches know if you are going, so we can get your weight called in. Wrestling Saturday will begin at 9 am. The cost is $10.

There is also a tournament in Emery on Friday. There will be at least one coach there (Riley) if any wrestlers are planning on going. If you are going, we will be calling in weights on Thursday. Let Riley know at practice on Wednesday so we can include you when we report the weights. The cost for Emery is $10, and wrestling begins at 5 pm.

Below is a slideshow of the North Sanpete tournament. I don't know all of the results, but I'll list those I do know:

Jake took 1st Place, Braygen took 1st Place in 3rd Grade and 1st in 4th Grade, Keegan 1st in 3rd Grade and 1st in 4th Grade, Tezlin 1st in 4th Grade and 1st in 5th Grade, Damon 2nd Place, Jaxson 2nd Place, Nathan 2nd Place, Jerrit took 2nd Place in 2nd Grade and 2nd Place in 3rd Grade, Kent 3rd Place, Jacob 2nd Place, Owen 2nd Place, Kyan 3rd Place. I'm missing the results for Douglas, Lane, Glen, Gage, little Owen, and Kelan.  If you are the parent of one of the wrestlers I'm missing, let me know and I'll update the results!

This Week...

This week we will have our regularly scheduled practices. Saturday, we will be going to the North Sanpete tournament. Weigh in's are from 7-8:30 am, and the cost is $10.

We've had a few parents ask about rooms for State Wrestling. Here's the info for those who may have missed it:

We are planning on staying at the Quality Inn Bryce Canyon the night of April 4th. It's about 5 miles outside of Panguitch, but it's a lot nicer of a motel than the ones in town. Plus, we are planning on doing a little BBQ for the team that night, and this motel has a room you can do stuff like that in.  You can click here for the website and to book online. If you prefer to call them, the phone number is (435) 676-8770. I would suggest booking ASAP, rooms fill up pretty fast.

Parent Note

Here's a copy of the parent note that was sent home this week...

Parents:

There are a couple of things we need to tell you about... First, Cody has sold his gym, which includes the building we currently wrestle in. The sale won’t affect the rest of this season, but we will be moving to a new location after State. Between now and State (April 5th), please make sure Cody has your contact information so we can let you know the details and location for next season.

Second, both Cody and Riley have accepted positions as head coaches for the Gunnison Middle School Wrestling Team, for the 2014-2015 school year. We will be incorporating the middle school wrestlers into our practices, which will help the older and more advanced wrestlers on our team. Starting next season, we will be accepting wrestlers from Kindergarten thru 8th grade.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you!

~Team Takedown Coaches

This Week and South Sevier Photos

We will be having practices as scheduled this week. The advanced team will be Tuesday and Wednesday from 4:30-6:30, and the regular team on Wednesday from 4:30-5:30.  Our next tournament will be this Saturday (March 1st) in Gunnison. Parents: If you get pictures of your wrestler at the Gunnison tournament, please email them to swinn1@farmersagent.com by Sunday night so we can include them in the slideshow.

Here are some pictures from South Sevier. Thank you to the parents who sent some pictures over, it's so hard to get them of everyone, especially when they wrestle in more than one gym... Some of the pictures don't have names on them, and that's because I can't tell who they are...

State Wrestling

If you're planning on going to State Wrestling this year (April 5th in Panguitch), it would be smart to start looking for a motel. The coaches will be staying at the Quality Inn (formerly the Bryce Canyon Western Resort), which is about 5 miles outside of Panguitch. We stayed there last year, and it was a pretty decent place.

Click Here for the hotel website. If you pre-pay and book online, the rate is $63.74 ($71.52 with tax) for the night of the 4th. Please keep in mind that the rate can change as the date gets closer.

Practice Changes and Juab Tournament

The wrestlers that traveled to Juab on Saturday did an awesome job! I'll post the results and slideshow tomorrow...

The coaches have decided to make some changes to the practice schedule. The advanced class will now go two days a week. They will practice on Tuesdays, from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm, and ALSO on Wednesday's, from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm.

The regular class will stay on Wednesday's only, however, they will now go from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm as well (instead of ending at 5:30 pm).

Juab information and order status

Here are the times for the Juab tournament on Saturday:

8:00-10:00 am: Pre-K/K and 1/2 Grade Divisions
10:00-11:30 am: 3/4 Grade Divisions
11:30-1:30 pm: 5/6 Grade Divisions

You will need to sign up for this tournament on track wrestling, and you will need a USA card. After you sign up, please text your weights to Cody. Please remember, you have to be signed up by 4:30 pm tomorrow (Friday, January 17th), and we need to have weights entered shortly after that. So please be signed up and weights turned in BEFORE that to avoid any issues. If you don't sign up on time, or get Cody your weight on time, you won't be allowed to wrestle Saturday.

We also handed out most of the gear last night. If you didn't get your stuff, get ahold of T&R. The grappling shorts haven't came in yet, so those will need to be picked up directly from them when they get here.  Also, if you haven't paid for your order, you'll need to do that. They will not release your stuff until it's paid for.

If you're going, please text Cody your weight and he will enter them Friday evening. I'll update this site tomorrow with tournament times.

This Week and the Beehive Brawl

We will have practice as scheduled this week (Wednesday at 4:30).

Our next tournament is the Beehive Brawl on January 24-25th. If you are planning on going, you need a USA card.

This year, the tournament is going to be a little different (and a little confusing). Everyone will weigh in on Friday, the 24th. Weigh in's begin at 2:00 pm at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield, and go until 8:00 pm. HOWEVER, if your son is going to wrestle in the 6 & under category, or the 8 & under category, their weigh in's will close at 5:15 pm, becuase they will be wrestling FRIDAY beginning at 6:30 pm.

If your wrestler falls into the 10 & under, 12 & under or 15 & under categories, they can weigh in till 8:00 pm, and will wrestle beginning at 9:00 am on Saturday.

Registration for the Beehive Brawl closes at midnight on January 20, 2014. When you register, please make sure you put your wrestler in the correct weight class. If you don't, they will charge you an extra $25 to correct it when you weigh in.

Please let a coach know if you are planning on going, so we know what wrestlers to look for. Thanks!

New Toy

You may have noticed this little guy while dropping off or picking up your wrestler from practice. If you're wondering what it is, it's our new Takedown Defender! It will help the boys perfect their takedown technique and gain speed during their takedowns.
It will also help them learn to use chest pressure and balance during a sprawl, so they can get behind their opponent to get points.

T&R called today and we will not have our singlets till next week, the order hasn't shown up yet. They also said that the shorts and other gear are being shipped seperately, so those may take an extra week or so.

Salt Lake Slam slideshow, Tournament information and order update

We had five wrestlers attend the Salt Lake Slam in Heber City. Our wrestlers battled with teams from Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming, Washington, Colorado, Nebraska, Montana, and Arizona, and did an amazing job! Owen came home with 2nd place, and Gage took 4th. Other wrestlers that attended were Glen, Tezlin and Keegan.

Here's a short slideshow:

Our next tournament will be the Beehive Brawl in Richfield, January 24-25. You need a USA Card to attend this tournament. You can sign up on TrackWrestling. To view the flyer for the tournament, click here.

We called T&R Sports for an update on the order for our wrestling gear. They are hoping everything comes this week, so hopefully we'll have everything by our practice next Wednesday. If by chance the order comes in today, we'll hand it out at tomorrows practice.
